FOUNDATION

Term 2 in the Foundation room has begun smoothly. The students have remembered the school and classroom routines well. I’m proud to say the students are successfully building onto their organisational and class listening skills. Well done, Foundation!

As we are approaching Winter, I’m asking that all parents put a spare pair of underpants and long pants in the students’ bags, in case of muddy puddles and wet weather accidents. Thank you!

During writing sessions, the students are beginning to learn how to write their own sentences as a Recount about their weekend. They are learning that a capital letter begins a sentence and a full stop ends the sentence. They are also learning to use their sounds in their writing. Well done, kids!

The first two weeks of the term in Maths has been about the numbers 11-20. We have been counting forwards and backwards by 1’s, learning ‘before and after’ numbers along with how to create that number in a collection. Week 4 sees the introduction of Fractions - halves. Students have been exploring shapes, objects and food items to see how 1 whole can be broken into 2 equal parts to create 2 halves.

Term 2 has been the introduction to Geography for the Foundation students. The topic in Geography is: ‘People live in Places.’ The students are learning to identify places that are important to people because they provide shelter and leisure activities. Their special place and features of that are a focal point in this topic along with how we care for these places.

The Perceptual Motor Program (working on body movements and coordination skills) is well under way with students learning about the names of body parts in relation to their movement e.g. ‘Motor-bike land’ is where you have your feet to hips apart and bend your knees then you put your arms in front and bend your elbows. A ‘motor-bike land’ is used when jumping off something to land safely on the ground.

We have learnt the names of the many pieces of sports equipment including: cube, tyre, hoop, body rocker, individual rocker, launch pad and more.

Our floor sessions are where we move around a space doing either directed, specific movements or free movements to music.

This term in Visual Arts, we are learning about lines. What are lines, what types of lines there are and how they can be used in Art. In Week 3, the students skipped ahead and made wonderful cupcake flowers for Mother’s Day. They learnt that shape can change form to 3D and adds a different dimension to an art piece. The students completed wonderful Mother’s Day cards for their mums. What a great effort Foundation class! I hope you all got spoilt on the day.

This term has also seen the introduction to the ‘Sounds Right, Read Write’ student workbook become part of the weekly set homework. Please ensure that you check SEQTA regularly for set homework details and general information.
